Understand the examination’s purpose
The insurer may request an independent medical examination, or IME. The report may affect the assessment of your disability and benefits. The appointment is for evaluation; organize treatment questions for your usual provider.
Review your history without memorizing a speech
Review how the accident happened, treatment received, and your current condition. Distinguish symptoms that existed before the injury from those that appeared afterward. If you cannot recall an exact date, say so. Preparation is about clarity, not rehearsed answers or making limitations sound more severe.
Describe real-world function
Instead of only saying your hand hurts, explain whether you struggle to hold tools, open containers, or repeat a task throughout a shift. Distinguish performing something once from doing it consistently. Describe better and worse days honestly. Follow your providers’ usual instructions about medication and assistive devices.
After the appointment
Record how long the examination lasted, which body parts were evaluated, and any communication difficulties. Give your attorney any documents received. If the later report contains errors, identify the specific detail and records that may clarify it. Discuss accompaniment or language assistance with your attorney before the appointment.
